Our parents and whanau tell us that they love Kereru Kindy because we are a kindy that let’s children be children !

 Because we get to know all the children individually and because we provide a home away from home. Because we allow children to explore, to learn and to have fun being pre-schoolers !

Because there are always lots of different activities happening, and because we are always introducing new concepts and challenges.

  • Our hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 5:30pm
  • Sessions are all day or half day or kindy sessions to suit your family
  • We are licenced for just 23 very lucky children from 2 through to 5 years of age
  • We offer 20 hours free to children aged 3 and 4 years and we are Winz subsidy approved
  • We are a lunch box centre – children bring their snacks and lunch just as they do at school

AKO:
(The teaching and learning relationship where the teacher is also the learner)

At Kereru Kindy, we recognize that the child brings uniqueness and a wealth of knowledge with them. We also recognize ourselves (teachers) as people who are able to keep an open mind, listen without bias and be humble enough to learn off others, including the children within our care. Our aim is to inspire this type of relationship between peer learning as well, where children are able to reciprocate an ako concept of learning and build off of each other’s knowledge and creativity. We provide an environment that inspires adventure play, where children are encouraged to take risks in a safe environment; thus building self confidence and a sense of accomplishment in all areas of their lives.

Wānanga:
(Communication, problem solving, innovation)

At Kereru Kindy we value a co-constructive and cooperative learning approach. We aim to inspire curiosity among learners by engaging in a process that shares and reflects upon current understandings, which lead to future learning and creation of new knowledge. We aim to always demonstrate an open mind, to explore different views and to reflect on our own values and beliefs.

Manaakitanga:
(Values- integrity trust, sincerity and equity)

At Kereru Kindy we believe that all children have a right to care, education and respect. We encompass and celebrate all cultures and invite children to share the uniqueness of their cultures daily within the centre. We understand and are committed to upholding Te Tiriti O Waitangi. We incorporate bicultural practices through the use of Te reo and Tikanga Māori throughout our daily routine.

Tangata Whenuatanga:
(Place-based, socio cultural awareness and knowledge)

At Kereru Kindy we aim to instil in children the strong sense of belonging within their environments, firm in the knowledge of where they come from and where they belong. We recognize the spiritual connections children have to the natural world which helps them define their positions within their environment. Through nature-based interactions we aim to evoke attitudes of respect, concern and the reciprocity between nature and child, which will give a deep understanding of what it means to nurture our ecological future.

Whanaungatanga:
(Relationships, students, community and whanau)

At Kereru Kindy we acknowledge that relationships are central to a person’s existence and foster a sense of whanaungatanga within our community. We aim to create an environment that enables young children to become a community of learners, fostering responsibility for self-directed learning. We believe our family/whanau and community are an integral part of our children’s learning. We encourage and welcome their views and aspirations for their children and welcome their time within our centre. We aim to foster a sense of togetherness in order to create an environment of harmony and union, celebrating all differences.
